New Ordered Truck Day ( term "truck" used loosely )

@honyock will appreciate the potential wait I am preparing to endure with his Ford Bronco order.

We are in need of a third vehicle that will likely be purchased from me by my Son when he graduates from Paramedic/EMT school next spring. He and my daughter who recently started driving have been driving a 2004 Toyota Highlander that is closing in on 300k miles and is playing on house money. The used car market is insane, you are looking at 20k for anything resembling late model with less than 100k miles.

So I've been eyeballing the new ford Maverick, which came out in 2022 and is basically a mini-truck but built on a unibody platform. I missed out on the 2022 order process, and they opened up the window for 2023 orders on Friday, and then subsequently closed them already today as the allotment for next year has already been reached. They are even ID checking those placing orders to make sure you are an actual person and not a dealer as it's apparently a very "flippable" vehicle. Who would have thought people would flip new vehicles ever? Usually you lose several grand just driving off the lot

So my dealer called me and I got my order in before it closed, I ended up ordering a Mid-trim level model with AWD, 2.0 turbo motor and a decent amount of modern niceties ( remote start/heated seat/etc ) without going way overboard for just about 30K. Kind of makes you sick to your stomach that a basic, somewhat entry level car costs 30k these days, but it is what it is. I also never thought I"d EVER pay sticker price for a vehicle, so there's another first i am not happy about, but again supply and demand rules. At least I didn't have to pay any dealer premiums which I've been told some are charging. ETA is quite fuzzy....could be 2 months, might be 10 months. I was told that over 80% of the pre-orders are for the Hybrid drivetrain, I opted for the regular Gas version - so maybe that will help.

The ordering was kind of fun...almost took be back to the days of configuring Semi-Custom Agiles on Rondo

T-minus 2.5 weeks to build week for me FYI...360-365 days since I ordered mine, but I have seen people still waiting that were day 1 orders like 700+ days.

Nice truck! Hope the waiting doesn´t take too long... (you can still play guitar in the meantime, you know? ).

BTW, I remembered @honyock a couple of weeks ago when I saw a NEW FORD BRONCO - SPORT, if I remember correctly - in the car wash near my home. I was like WT*? A new 2022 Bronco here? With the wait list in the US? Then I remembered there are some persons here in Venezuela who can have almost anything they want. I´m tired of seeing new Land Rovers and Toyotas all around - and other makes -. That´s not for the regular mortals here.

Anyway, that´s a tangent not to get into.

PS: Not related, but since you mentioned us, the old schoolers , this picture below brings me lots of good memories, how I miss that stick of my old school truck ; most new cars & trucks these days are way too much high tech for my taste. Points if you guess what car it is (it´s a 4x4)!

Was going to order a Maverick when they first came out, XLT AWD, 2.0. I never got around to it and now it's impossible. As you said, used prices are insane and new cars over msrp is crazy. Just waiting it out now and driving what we have.

I owned a Maverick briefly back in the day. I just drove it to work and back. I saw was of these new truck Mavericks the other day. I think Hyundai is making a similar vehicle too. Congrats on the NOTD and I hope the order goes better than my custom Agile order did (didn't). My next door neighbor just received his new 2023 70th Anniversary Corvette. He ordered quite awhile back. He has been contacted several times already with offers to buy it for more than he paid. Crazy times.

Pity that trucks have not been sold in the U.S. in about twenty years or so.
All you can get today are ugly four door sedans missing the trunklid.
And please don't bother trying to tell me that is a pickup bed because I know better.
I once had a 1964 Chevy Impala two door hardtop and the trunk on that car was larger than the faux pickup beds they put on these things.
Amazes me they sell these things at all. Guess if people don't know better??????????

I am purchasing this in full knowledge that is' not a truck. Having said that, I drive a modern full size truck and I can assure you they still make them. Not only that, they blow away anything that was made in the 70's and 80s in every possible category - more powerful, more efficient, longer lasting, etc. Yes, a lot of the full size trucks sold these days are not driven as trucks, and a lot of them come with a 5.5" bed, but you can still buy a regular cab/8" bed model just like your grandpa's truck.

The closest I got was sitting in one that was already sold to someone else, but yes - it's another side-effect of the whole supply chain issue. Most new cars are sold before they ever arrive at the lots these days so inventory is basically zero.

The whole vehicle market in the USA is brutally overpriced, especially when you compare the pricing trend over the last 30 years or so, against the increase of real income. This was happening before the recent supply chain issues.

This is what led to the leasing becoming so popular; now maybe the rule rather than the exception.
Endless cycle of long term rental car payments, but less worries I suppose.

Granted, the technologies, safety and features have greatly advanced.
I hate the tire pressure monitors that show the actual tire pressures; my wife is always nagging me about 1psi difference, lol.
This is on the Nissan Rogue we bought used / just off lease a few years ago; glad it is paid off.
Its an ok vehicle I guess.

And remember, the cash for clunkers thing pulled out a whole generation of used vehicles from the market, for reasons that I wont get into.

Yes to all of the above. Several of the high-end/luxury SUV's are MSRP over $100,000K from Jeep/Lincoln/Caddy - which is just plain stoopid.

Also agreed on the electronics. My 2017 truck has some tech, but it was the last year that the F150 did not come standard with all the driver assist/auto start stop tech. And now they have added the variable displacment systems, semi-auto driving copilot stuff, etc. It's worth almost as much as I paid for it 5 years later, but i'm keeping it for a long time to avoid the tech invasion and its almost paid off too. Allegedly the aluminum body will resist corrosion better, we'll see if that's the case.

You can still get regular cab 8ft bed trucks, they are everywhere on the south side of town here...

I've not seen one locally since about 2000 except for codgers with "antique" tags or rat rods. I have a 2005 HHR Panel truck because no dealer around here has had anything but four door sedans without trunklids I could trade it for. I'll never spend a penny on something called a pickup but has four doors.

And I really do not want to drive to Arizona to find one.

Now that both spouses work in most households, having just a regular cab truck doesn't work for a lot of guys. Gotta be able to haul the kids, wife needs to be comfortable or you get stuck driving the family car and most guys who still retain their balls in their marriage would rather die than drive a mini-van thus the rise in SUVs and Crew Cab trucks with a 4ft bed...

I went for highly depreciated V8 station wagon that would put my old Mustang to shame and a vintage long bed 2wd truck that could survive a nuclear winter...

The mini-van is the reason there are no cool station wagons that they get in Europe, why there is only one North American car company still making a proper sedan (which is dying this model year BTW).

Also my step dad drove one, and he was a giant dick, so I have bad memories of mini-vans...

I am a car guy too. It's just a vehicle that fits our use case, not something that defines who I am. My wife says she might get an SUV next, when the kids are no longer destroying everything they touch. I advocated for another van. They just do everything we need well, without the stupidity of paying extra to ride higher and use more gas.

And I may (once the current used market improves) buy a toy. If I can get enough weight off, I am thinking C4 or 5. Or something else interesting. My son wants me to do a Jeep.

We’ve had Minivans since our 2nd was born and I’m with you on all counts. My wife is currently driving a 2019 Toyota Sienna, it’s our third one and we love it. It’s basically the same drivetrain and platform as the Sienna SUV but with more room. It’s super comfortable, rides smooth and has plenty of power. You can haul a ton of sruff, we’ve even used it as a makeshift camper with the back seats down and middle row forward . We got the XLE trim with leather and sunroof This time too so its plush.

Yeah, you can still get a full 8 foot bed option with the dual cab models. Most people like me do not need it. It is more of a contractor or farm thing. Forget about a traditional size parking spot though. I had a 2000 Dodge 4x4 suicide door back seat with the Cummings Diesel for 20 years. My best bro bought it off us and now I have a 2019 Ram Eco Diesel. It is an awesome truck. Quiet, smooth, comfortable and will pull the trailer with 2 Harleys like there is nothing back there.

Minivans: The Home Depot drywall sheets to fix the farmer's porch came home in the Honda Odyssey.

Freaking engineers, there is about 1 cm clearance all around!

EDIT: and the Odyssey drives and feels pretty much like an Accord with a V6!

Been eyeballing a Maverick as well. I've missed out on the Maverick orders and my local dealership had one come through this weekend, but I was out of town. They don't stay on the lot long.. I think it's like 4 days. Plus they are marking these up, but not as much as the Broncos.
