Here's another bass cover for y'all... I've known this song for a long time, but only amused myself by playing along with the record every now and then, and never thought to knuckle down and record it. I'll tell ya, the hard thing about playing the bass part is NOT the odd time signatures, or the fact that it changes frequently (7/4, 3/4, 6/4, 4/4), it's that Nick Mason obviously didn't play to a click track, and the tempo is kind of... variable from verse to verse. It's very slight, and you don't really notice it as a casual listener, but when you're playing bass to it, you feel it.

I'm getting frustrated with what YouTube and BitChute do to my videos when I upload them. I shoot these videos with a decent video camera (not a cell phone) at 1080p, and it looks good on my computer, but when I put them on either platform (actually YouTube slaps me down for copyright every time... I guess fair use applies to some people and not others), it looks like I shot it with a $30 web cam, and I have no idea what to do about it. So I apologize for the video quality, and if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be grateful.

Otherwise, I hope you dig it!

Fun fact: Roger Waters did not play the bass part on the original recording. It was good ol' Dave Gilmour. :D

Yeah!!!! Very nice! My bass player buddy’s been learning that one too... I’m gonna direct him to this. Really great job.

Thanks guys! This is actually my first time (voluntarily) playing bass with a pick. I could never get comfortable with it before. I think playing guitar almost exclusively for the past few years has made it easier.

Do you think the bass is too far back in the mix? It occurred to me last night that I only have my studio monitors for a reference (which have really good bass response), so I listened through a few different pairs of headphones, and I found the bass to be noticeably subdued with the more "consumer grade" cans.

Like most bassists, I tend to want to hear the bass up front, so I think I tend to err too much on the side of caution, and push the bass further back in the mix than it needs to be.

Great job, Ed! I enjoyed it. Bass presence is ok for me. I´m also in the "put-the-bass-up-front" boat.

Even though the video is noticeable in low quality, I could not get it to play without interruptions. It stopped and go every few seconds. I could enjoy the performance, even with that conditions.

Nice!

I intentionally left the title vague, to inspire curiousity. 8-)

Thanks Saba... Maybe I'm being overly critical. Unlike my "Something" cover, I did not slavishly spend a lot of time trying to match the bass tone and make it sound exactly like the original recording. I did listen to the isolated bass track to make sure I wasn't missing anything or getting anything wrong, but I didn't want to give in to my perfectionism and end up taking several days (or never) to get it in the can. I knew Roger Waters played a P-bass with flat-wound strings in the '70s (I'm assuming Dave just played Roger's bass on the track), and figured that was good enough. I just EQ'd it until it sounded good to me, and made a point to only record 3 or 4 takes, with minimal tweaking here and there.

Of course, now that it's done, I've been listening to it over and over, trying to pick nits. :D

Thanks Tom.. I've been contemplating tweaking the mix, but that would involve rendering the video again and re-uploading it to BitChute, which are both time-consuming processes, so I don't want to do it unless it's absolutely necessary. But I predict I'll probably do it anyway... What did you listen to the video with?

It's called a "pinky". I don't know who named it... It's no pinker than the rest of my fingers... I probably would have called it something else. :)

This song sure is a workout for it, though... Of course, there's an easier way to play it, but I like to avoid using open strings on the bass as much as possible... Especially when playing Pink(y) Floyd (yuk-yuk).

Is that "Inside Out"? I just might pick that up on Kindle. Thanks for the recommendation. I read a bio about Pink Floyd many years ago called: "A Saucer Full of Secrets", but I can barely remember anything about it.

Great take. I play the solo on guitar sometimes. I been wanting to get back to bass. This would be a good workout. Just from song length alone.

Thanks Damon... This song is a workout for sure. Especially if you play it without any open notes (which I recommend, whenever possible). I hadn't played this song in so long, I had to rehearse it for a few days just so I could get through it without a lot of lactic acid building up in my hand. You'll notice that during the guitar solo (the chromatic walk-down), I shifted my hand rather than starting off with my pinky, just to give it a rest until the main riff came back around again.
